octupets2301In times past when someone gave birth to more than 4 kids at one time (especially 7 or 8 ) the family was the talk of happy news casts around the world with people offering money and gifts. However Nadya Suleman age 33yrs gave birth to 8 kids at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and she already has 6 others ranging from age 2yrs – 7yrs. Many news organizations have been very curious about her and did some digging..

  • She lives with her mom
  • She is not married and does not appear to have a long term mate. This makes her a single mom.
  • AND… She already has 6 kids (including a set of twins)

I’m sure that the 6 children she had previously are beautiful and full of energy. With 8 more added.. how will she be able to work to support them? There is no way she could afford the childcare let alone food and diapers.

Nadya’s mom told the AP that she conceived all her children via IVF and has been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager. Nadya’s mother also stated that birthing more babies can no longer continue..

“It’s over now, it has to be. It can’t go on any longer. She’s got six children and no husband. I was brought up the traditional way. I firmly believe in marriage. But she didn’t want to get married. So she got the in vitro.”

The six boys and two girls are only the second octuplets born alive in the United States. The were born nine weeks premature and ranged between 1 pound 8 ounces and 3 pounds 4 ounces at birth.

The San Jose Mercury News has an article in which the grandmother of 14 said that she won’t be home when Nadya returns.

“Instead of becoming a kindergarten teacher or something, she started having them, but not the normal way,” he mother said. Her daughter’s obsession with children caused Angela Suleman considerable stress, so she sought help from a psychologist, who told her to order her out of the house.

She also said she warned her daughter: When Nadya gets home, “I’m going to be gone.”

Ethical questions are being raised as well. In an interview with ABC News, bioethicist, Arthur Caplan said:

Anyone who transfers eight embryos should be arrested for malpractice.”

Current guidelines, not law, would suggest between one and four embryos to be implanted. Many experts would say that implanting eight is a bad idea.
