Judge frees man after 23yrs in prison

Justice finally came for a man who was imprisoned wrongfully for the death of a woman 23yrs ago. Robert Stinson walked out of the New Lisbon Correctional Institution as a free man. The Wisconsin Innocence Project was instrumental in his case and a judge vacated his sentence based on DNA evidence that did not match and bite-mark analysis that was not conclusive from the crime scene. Mr. Stinson was convicted of killing 63yr old Ione Cychosz who was beaten to death, possibly raped, and bitten 8 times.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said in a statement Friday that Stinson’s conviction was not wrongful, and that he was convicted based on:

 ”state-of-the-art scientific evidence available at the time of his trial. The question today is whether there is newly discovered evidence in this case to warrant a new trial, and we agree that such evidence exists.”
